Usain Bolt Sets 100m World Record
Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt ran 9.58 seconds in the 100 meters at the Berlin World Championships, setting a world record that has stood for over 15 years.
On August 16, 2009, at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt ran the 100 meters in 9.58 seconds — shattering his own world record by 0.11 seconds, an enormous margin in a race measured in hundredths. Standing 6'5" (196 cm), Bolt defied the conventional wisdom that tall sprinters couldn't accelerate fast enough. His combination of height, stride length, and explosive power produced a record many biomechanists believe may stand for decades. Bolt went on to win eight Olympic gold medals across three Games (2008, 2012, 2016), completing the "triple-triple" (100m, 200m, 4x100m at three consecutive Olympics). His charismatic celebrations and dominance made him the most famous track and field athlete since Jesse Owens.
