Nintendo Switch Redefines Console Gaming

Nintendo released the Switch, a hybrid home-and-portable console that sold over 140 million units and proved that innovation, not raw power, wins the console wars.

On March 3, 2017, Nintendo released the Switch — a hybrid console that could be played on a TV at home or taken on the go as a handheld device. After the commercial failure of the Wii U, many analysts had written off Nintendo's hardware business. The Switch proved them wrong. Its library — anchored by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (often called the greatest game ever made), Super Mario Odyssey, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which became a cultural lifeline during COVID-19 lockdowns), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — was irresistible. The Switch sold over 140 million units, surpassing the Wii and Game Boy to become Nintendo's best-selling home console. It demonstrated that in the console wars, innovation and software quality matter more than technical specifications — a lesson Nintendo had been teaching since 1985.
