iPhone 12 — 5G and MagSafe

Apple released the iPhone 12 with 5G connectivity and MagSafe, ushering in next-generation wireless and a magnetic accessory ecosystem.

On October 23, 2020, Apple released the iPhone 12 lineup — the first iPhones to support 5G cellular networks, promising dramatically faster download speeds and lower latency. The design returned to flat edges reminiscent of the iPhone 4, and introduced MagSafe — a ring of magnets on the back of the phone enabling precise wireless charging and a snap-on accessory ecosystem. The A14 Bionic chip, built on a 5-nanometer process, was the most advanced mobile processor at the time. The iPhone 12 also introduced Ceramic Shield for improved drop protection and was Apple's first iPhone to ship without a charger in the box, citing environmental sustainability.
