In 622 CE, Prophet Muhammad and his followers migrated from Mecca to Medina (then known as Yathrib) to escape persecution. This migration, known as the Hijra, marks the beginning of the Islamic calendar. In Medina, Muhammad established a political community that would grow into a vast Islamic civilization spanning from Spain to Central Asia within a century of his death.
