Founding of Rome

According to legend, Romulus founded the city of Rome, which would become the center of one of history's greatest empires.

Traditional Roman historiography dates the founding of Rome to April 21, 753 BCE. According to legend, the city was founded by Romulus and Remus, twin sons of Mars. Romulus killed Remus in a quarrel and became the first king of Rome. The city grew from a small settlement on the Palatine Hill to become the capital of an empire that would dominate the Mediterranean world for centuries.
