The 2026 Nepal Floods — Glacial Collapse in the Himalayas

A glacial collapse on Langtang Lirung triggered catastrophic flash floods along the Trishuli River in Nepal, killing over 1,300 people and displacing tens of thousands — a disaster linked to climate change.

On August 26, 2026, a massive glacial collapse on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas — registering magnitude 5.2 on seismometers worldwide — triggered catastrophic flash floods and debris flows along a 72-kilometer stretch of the Trishuli River in Nepal. The floods destroyed the Gyirong checkpoint on the China-Nepal border and struck dozens of settlements in the districts of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, and Chitwan. At least 1,342 people were killed in Nepal, with an additional 43 deaths in Tibet. Nearly 3,000 people remained missing. The floodwaters carried victims as far as 240 kilometers into neighboring India. Over 84,000 people were affected, including more than 32,000 children. Nearly 12,000 people were rescued from flooded areas, including dramatic rescues from hydropower tunnels. The disaster was directly linked to accelerating glacial melt driven by climate change — Himalayan glaciers have lost ice 65% faster since 2000 than in the previous decade. Scientists warned that as temperatures continue to rise, glacial lake outburst floods and ice collapses will become more frequent and more deadly across the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region, threatening the lives and livelihoods of 240 million people.
