On April 26, 1986, Reactor No. 4 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Ukraine suffered a catastrophic explosion during a safety test. The blast and subsequent fire released 400 times more radioactive material than the Hiroshima bomb, contaminating large areas of Belarus, Ukraine, and Russia. The Soviet government initially denied the accident; it was only confirmed when Swedish monitoring stations detected the radiation cloud. An exclusion zone of 30 kilometers was established around the plant, and the city of Pripyat (population 49,000) was permanently evacuated. The immediate death toll was 31 workers and firefighters, but the long-term health effects — including thyroid cancer, birth defects, and psychological trauma — affected hundreds of thousands. Chernobyl accelerated the collapse of the Soviet Union, transformed global attitudes toward nuclear energy, and remains the worst nuclear disaster in history alongside Fukushima.
